First Period Blitz Enough for Men's Hockey Victory

APPLETON, Wis. -- The Trine University men's hockey team rode a five goal first period to victory defeating hosts Lawrence University by the score of 5-2.

The Thunder opened the scoring just 21 seconds into the contest. Freshman Noah Dollo (Minden, Ontario) came up the goal the first of his career. Junior Carmine Taffo (Staten Island, N.Y.) added an assist.

Taffo added to his night in the fifth minute of the contest giving the Thunder a 2-0 lead with a goal of his own. Classmate Corey Robertson (South Lyon, Mich.) added the assist.

The offense for the Thunder kept rolling in the 11th minute, this time sophomore Hunter Payment (Monroe, Mich.) hit pay dirt. Sophomore Brandon Krumpschmid (Grand Rapids, Mich.) and freshman Brendan Prappas (West Bloomfield, Mich.) added assists. The goal gave the Thunder the 3-0 lead and would end up being the gamewinner when all was said and done.

Trine finished off the scoring in the period with a pair of goals from freshman Brad Jenion (Macclesfield, Great Britain), the second of which came as on a shorthanded effort.

The Thunder took a 5-0 lead into the first intermission and, following a scoreless second period, the second intermission as well. They would surrender two goals in the third, but held off any further offense form the Vikings to end the contest with a 5-2 win.

Senior Brett Young (Livonia, Mich.) picked up his third win of the season in net. He turned in two shutout periods on the back of 25 saves.

Trine improves to 3-1 overall and 2-0 in Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) play following the win. They will continue their season when they host St. Norbert College on Friday, Nov. 15. The game, which is the first of a weekend doubleheader, is set to start at 7 p.m.
