Delaney's Three Points Give Men's Hockey 3-1 Victory

DULUTH, Minn. -- The Trine University men's hockey team picked up a 3-1 victory over their hosts from the College of St. Scholastica to secure a weekend split.

Neither team found the back of the net in the first period, but the Thunder came away with a slight lead in the shots column. They tallied six shots on goal to the Saints' five.

Trine got over their offensive troubles early in the second. The team's first goal came in the second minute of play when junior Chris Garrity (Stafford, Va.) tallied a goal. Sophomore TJ Delaney (St. Louis, Mo.) and junior Blake Robertson (South Lyon, Mich.) added assists.

The Thunder then added to their lead just over a minute later with Delaney recording the goal. Freshmen Brett Piper (Cartier, Manitoba) and Brad Jenion (Macclesfield, Great Britain) added assists. Delaney's second goal of the season gave the team a 2-0 lead.

Both teams would go scoreless through the rest of the period, entering the second intermission with Trine leading 2-0.

St. Scholastica pulled back within one during the 11th minute of the contest, but the Thunder responded in the 14th minute to take back the two goal lead.

The goal, which would end up being the last of the contest was scored by Piper with assists added by Delaney and freshman Brendan Prappas (West Bloomfield, Mich.).

The 3-1 lead would be enough for the Thunder and they would leave the arena with a win.

Senior Brett Young (Livonia, Mich.) picked up the decision in net for Trine finishing the game with 31 saves.

The Thunder improve to 5-3 overall and 4-2 in Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) play following the win. They will next take the ice when they travel to face St. Thomas University on Friday, Dec. 13. The game is set to begin at 7:30 p.m. CST.
