Sabres Startled by Men's Hockey

ANGOLA, Ind. -- After trailing at the halfway point of the second period the Trine University men's hockey team roared back to finish with a 5-1 victory over visiting Marian University.

The lone goal of the first period came from the Sabres on the power-play and the team would hold onto the 1-0 lead through the halfway point of the second period.

Then in the 12th minute of the second stanza, the Thunder took advantage of a power-play opportunity of their own. Freshman Justin Hendrickson (Marquette, Mich.) started the play by firing a shot wide of the net which rebounded off the wall and landed in front of classmate Frank Trazzera (Keller, Texas). From there a quick pass to the front of the net found sophomore TJ Delaney (St. Louis, Mo.) for a wide-open look which he buried to tie the game at one.

Trine would take the lead just over three minutes later. This time a loose puck right in front of the net gave Trazzera a chance for his own goal which he muscled past the opposition's goalie. Freshman Justin Meers (St. Charles, Mo.) and sophomore Garrett Hallford (McKinney, Texas) added assists. The team took the 2-1 lead into the second intermission.

In the ninth minute of the final period, the Thunder built their lead to two. Freshman Brendan Prappas (West Bloomfield, Mich.) and junior Carmine Taffo (Staten Island, N.Y.) worked the puck down the ice to start the play. Taffo ended up with the puck to the side of the net and dropped a pass to sophomore William Casey (Eagle River, Alaska) who had trailed the pair into the zone. Casey made the most of the opportunity by scoring the goal.

The team would add two more goals in the waning minutes of the contest, both empty-netters, and came away with the 5-1 victory.

In net, senior Brett Young (Livonia, Mich.) once again turned in a great performance, ending the contest with 34 saves while allowing just the single goal.

Trine improves to 10-8-1 overall and 5-4-1 in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association following the win. They will travel to face Aurora University in their next contest which is scheduled for 3 p.m. CST on Friday, Jan. 31.
