Five Score in Lopsided Victory

ANGOLA, Ind. – After conceding an early goal, the Trine University men's hockey team scored six straight on their way to a 6-3 home opening victory over visiting Fredonia State University. Five different members of the team tallied a goal in the contest.

The Blue Devils struck first, scoring the opening goal of the day just 43 seconds into the game.

Fredonia also recorded the first penalty of the game in the seventh minute. The miscue gave the Thunder the advantage, which the pressed for their first goal of the season. Freshman Keiton Klein scored the goal with Jackson Clark and Thad Marcola adding assists.

Trine was down a man for their second goal of the day. After forcing the turnover in their defensive end, freshman Michael DiPietra ended up with the puck in front of the net. Drew Welsch and Tim Organ added assists on the goal. The 2-1 score held into the first intermission.

The Thunder scored three unanswered goals in four minutes of game time during the second period to build their lead to 5-1. Josh Wright, Bobby Price and Clark each recorded a goal during the blitz. Welsch and DiPietra were joined by freshman Jack Cooper in adding assists.

Klein scored his second of the day in the early minutes of the third period, with Josh Wright and Sam Henry adding assists, to make the score 6-1. The final two goals went in favor of the Blue Devils cutting the deficit back to 6-3.

Cristian Wong-Ramos recorded the victory in net for the team. He finished the game with 21 saves, while allowing the three goals.

Game two of the doubleheader will be played tomorrow, Saturday, October 28 with opening faceoff scheduled for 4 p.m.
