Thunder Fall to John Carroll in Opener

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, OHIO— Trine's men's lacrosse team was defeated by John Carroll, 11-6, in the season-opener for the Thunder Saturday afternoon.

Seven-straight goals in the middle two periods by the Blue Streaks proved too much for Trine to overcome. Stephen Leous and Gary Anile each scored three goals to pace JC. George Youpel (Chicago Ridge, Ill./St. Rita) and Chris Ward (Oak Lawn, Ill./St. Rita) scored two goals-apiece to lead Trine. Rob Brzezinski (Livonia, Mich./Detroit Catholic Central) notched a game-high seven ground balls to go along with a goal for the Thunder. The Blue Streaks outshot the Thunder by a 43-29 margin. Trine opens the season 0-1. John Carroll improves to 2-0.

Daniel Kincaid and Declan O'Grady each added two goals for John Carroll. Jack MacLean added a team-high six ground balls, while Tommy Adolf added four ground balls and three caused turnovers. JC held a 30-20 edge in ground balls. Brian Bedell made 12 saves to earn the victory in net.

Adam Martin (Farmington Hills, Mich./Detroit Catholic Central) notched Trine's other tally. Paul Carlquist (Downers Grove, Ill/Downers Grove South) added an assist. Matt Lamb made 15 saves while playing the full 60 minutes in net.

JC took control of the action early, outscoring the Thunder 3-1 in the opening quarter. Gary Anile scored the Blue Streaks' first two goals, while Keegan Flinter added another tally. Youpel scored Trine's lone tally in the first quarter.

Trine got two straight to start the second quarter on goals by Rob Brzezinski and Youpel, but John Carroll answered with four goals to close the period. Stephen Leous scored two goals, the second of which came with a man-up to give JC a 7-3 advantage with 4:24 left on the clock. The Blue Streaks would take that advantage into the half.

The Blue Streaks kept the run going with three-straight to start the third period. O'Grady's unassisted goal with 1:14 remaining in the period pushed the score to 10-3. Bedell came up big in the third for the Blue Streaks with eight saves in the period. That margin proved too much for the Thunder to overcome.

Trine returns to action Saturday, Mar. 1 when they travel to Guilford College as part of the Thunder's two-game spring break trip. Face-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
