Big Third Quarter Leads Guilford Over Trine

GREENSBORO, N.C.-- A big third-quarter led Guilford to a 17-5 victory over Trine's men's lacrosse team Saturday night at Armfield Athletic Center.

The Quakers erupted for 10 goals in the third quarter to turn a 7-4 lead into a 17-4 advantage and put the game out of reach. Daniel Hughey, Adam Fiore and Jace Sowden each scored four goals to lead Guilford. Fiore added six assists, four ground balls and a caused turnover. Rob Brzezinski (Livonia, Mich./Detroit Catholic Central) notched a goal and nine ground balls to lead Trine. He won 14-of-24 faceoffs. Trine falls to 0-2 on the season. Guilford improves to 3-0.

The Quakers outshot the Thunder 50-37 and recorded a 40-28 edge in ground balls. Thomas Dean made 10 saves in 45 minutes to earn the victory in net for GC. Matt Lamb (Akron, Ohio/Revere) stopped 13 shots and was tagged with the loss in goal for the Thunder.

Guilford jumped on Trine early, building a 3-0 lead with 3:12 remaining in the first quarter. Daniel Haupt scored the first two goals of the game for GC. Jake Ahearn (Naperville, Ill./Naperville) got Trine on the board with 2:12 remaining in the quarter to jump-start a three-goal run.

The momentum from Ahearn's goal carried over into the second quarter, as Paul Carlquist (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) and George Youpel (Chicago Ridge, Ill./St. Rita) each scored goals to knot the score at 3-3. The Quakers outscored the Thunder 4-1 the rest of the quarter to take a 7-4 lead into the break.

The 10-goal explosion in the third put the game out of reach. Sowden scored all four of his goals during the quarter. Hughey added three scores in the stanza, while Fiore added a pair of tallies.

Trine returns to action Friday, Mar. 7 at Sewanee. Face-off is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
