Thunder Fall at Sewanee

SEWANEE, TENN.-- A big first period by Sewanee proved too much for the Trine men's lacrosse team to overcome, as the Thunder fell to the Tigers 14-3 Friday night.

The Tigers scored six goals in the first period and never led by less than four the rest of the way. Matthew Stiefel scored four goals and added three ground balls for Sewanee. Hayden Byrd added three goals and four ground balls, while Davis Brown notched three goals. Tommy Healy made four saves in three quarters of action to earn the victory in net. Chris Ward led Trine with a goal and an assist. Sewanee outshot Trine 68-17 and held a 49-29 edge in ground balls.The Thunder fall to 0-3 on the season. Sewanee is now 3-1 overall.

The six-goal first quarter proved too much for the Thunder to overcome. Stiefel and Davis Brown each scored two goals in the opening stanza. The Tigers outshot Trine 18-4 in the first quarter.

Ward (Oak Lawn, Ill./St. Rita) got Trine on the board at the 12:43 mark of the second quarter. Paul Carlquist (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) picked up the assist. George Youpel (Chicago Ridge, Ill./St. Rita) scored at the 11:43 mark to cut the score to 6-2, with Cap picking up the assist.

That was as close as Trine would get however, as a six-goal third by Sewanee put the game out of reach. Byrd scored all three of his tallies in the third, while Stiefel added a pair of goals.

Trine returns to action Wednesday, Mar. 12 when they take on Oberlin in a game set to be played at John Carroll University. Face-off is set for 6:00 p.m.
