OBERLIN, Ohio-- Oberlin scored three unanswered goals to close out the game and earn an 8-5 victory over Trine in non-conference action Wednesday afternoon at Knowlton Athletic Complex.
The Yeoman broke a five-all tie by scoring the final three goals of the game to earn the victory. Eric Hager scored three goals to lead the way for Oberlin. Paul Carlquist (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) notched his third-straight effort of three or more points, scoring two goals and adding an assist to pace the Thunder attack. The Yeoman outshot Trine by a 24-7 margin in the second half and converted 3-of-10 extra-man opportunities. The Thunder fall to 0-3 on the season. Oberlin improved to 3-1.
Jordan Backer (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville), Brian Orr (Lombard, Ill./Montini Catholic) and Steven Coyle (Las Vegas, Nev./Bishop Gorman) each caused two turnovers to anchor the Trine defensive effort. Ryan Nelson (Stillwater, Minn./Mahtomedi Senior) made eight saves in the second half, while Travis Lores (Kildeer, Ill./Lake Zurich) notched seven saves.
The Thunder started hot, scoring the first three goals of the game. Carlquist got Trine on the board just seven seconds into the contest. Nick Maher (DeWitt, Mich./DeWitt) followed just over 30 seconds later to put the Thunder up 2-0 less than a minute into the contest. Maher's goal was the first of his collegiate career. Carlquist added his second tally to give Trine a 3-0 lead.
Oberlin responded with a four-goal run to take the lead. Goals by Hager, Nick Lobley and Ian McCague tied the score, before Sean Seaman scored a man-up goal to give the Yeoman their first lead early in the second quarter. Chris Ward (Oak Lawn, Ill./St. Rita) tied the score before Hager scored on an EMO to give Oberlin a 5-4 lead going into the half.
The Thunder knotted the score in the third when Carlquist corralled a ground ball on the right side, raced in towards the net and dished off to G.T. Youpel (Chicago Ridge, Ill./St. Rita) for a two-on-one goal at the 10:56 mark.
Oberlin tightened down defensively and took the lead on Reese Koburov's goal with 4:19 to play in the third. Hager and McCague added fourth quarter insurance goals to give the Yeoman the victory.
Trine returns to action this Saturday, Mar. 14 when they travel to face Wilmington (OH). Faceoff is set for 2 p.m.
