Men's Lacrosse Falls at Dubuque

DUBUQUE, Iowa -- Dubuque outscored the Trine men's lacrosse team over the final two quarters to earn a 12-9 victory over the Thunder Saturday afternoon at Oyen Field.

Trine scored the first four goals of the game, but the Spartans tied things up going into the half and outscored the Thunder 8-5 over the course of the final two quarters to get the win. Tyler Klima (Schaumburg, Ill. / Schaumburg) and Neil Orr (Lombard, Ill. / Montini Catholic) each tallied two goals to lead Trine's attack. Josh Berry-Wingate filled the stat sheet with five goals, two assists, six ground balls and four caused turnovers to lead Dubuque. The Thunder fell to 1-1. Dubuque improved to 2-2.

Connor Putman (Ridgefield, Conn. /  Ridgefield) added a goal and assist, while Daniel Shine (Chicago, Ill. / Lane College Tech Prep) notched a pair of assists for a multi-point game. Justin Gearig (Vicksburg, Mich. / Vicksburg) added his first career goal, while Brandon Walters (Bloomfield Hills, Mich. / University of Detroit Jesuit), Nick Maher (DeWitt, Mich. / DeWitt) and Jordan Batie (Goshen, Ky. / North Oldham) also scored for the Thunder.

Michael Mullins notched two goals and two assists for Dubuque. Tyler Svoboda added three tallies for the Spartans. Dubuque held a 33-32 edge in shots on goal and was perfect in 13 clearing attempts.

The two teams traded four-goal quarters to send the game to the half in a 4-4 tie. Maher, Klima, Gearig and Orr all scored in the opening quarter for the Thunder. Gearig's came in a man-up situation as Shine picked up his first assist. Berry-Wingate notched a goal and two assists in the second quarter and Svoboda tallied twice as the Spartans tied the score.

After a Berry-Wingate goal, Trine scored three straight to take a 7-5 lead in the third quarter. Putman's man-up tally capped the three-goal surge. Dubuque added three-straight of its own to take an 8-7 lead through three. A Berry-Wingate goal with 2:04 remaining gave the Spartans the lead for good.

The Spartans pushed the lead to three with two goals to open the fourth. Trine cut the deficit to two on Walters' goal, but could get no closer the rest of the way.

Trine returns to action next Saturday, Mar. 11 at Wilmington (Ohio). Face-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
