CONWAY, Ark. -- The Trine men's lacrosse team was defeated by Hendrix, 12-6, in non-conference action Thursday night at Young-Wise Memorial Stadium.
The Warriors scored six of the first seven goals to take command early. Jack Gorman tallied four goals and an assist to lead Hendrix. Zachary Paterson (Westfield, Ind. / Westfield) made a school-record 27 saves in net for the Thunder. He broke the previous record of 26 set by Matt Lamb at Sewanee in 2014. Trine fell to 2-2 overall. Hendrix improved to 5-4.
Paterson made 16 of his saves in the first half and added seven more in the third quarter. His final save with 6:48 to play in the fourth quarter set the new program record.
Neil Orr (Lombard, Ill. / Montini Catholic) paced the Thunder attack with a pair of goals. Jordan Lelito (West Chicago, Ill. / West Chicago) added a goal and assist, while Nick Maher (DeWitt, Mich. / DeWitt) also notched a two-point night with a pair of assists. Ian Grise (Goshen, Ind. / Northridge) added his first career goal, while Brandon Walters (Bloomfield Hills, Mich. / University of Detroit Jesuit) and Daniel Shine (Chicago, Ill. / Lane Tech College Prep) also scored.
Keith McCowan (Cary, Ill. / Cary-Grove) notched a team-high five ground balls. Alex Jamieson (Hartland, Wis. / Arrowhead), Nils Hay (Schaumburg, Ill. / Schaumburg) and Aaron Warner (League City, Texas / Clear Springs) each caused two turnovers.
Matt Latham notched two goals and an assist for Hendrix. T. Michael Thomas and Alex Ortenstone each added multi-goal efforts. Hendrix outshot Trine by a 55-30 margin.
Thomas and Gorman got the Warriors on the board before Orr cut the score to 2-1 with 4:07 to play in the first quarter. Hendrix closed the quarter on a three-goal run and added to the lead when another Thomas goal made the score 6-1 with 14:07 to play in the second quarter.
Walters scored off a feed from Tyler Klima (Schaumburg, Ill. / Schaumburg) to stop the run, but the Warriors countered by scoring the final three goals of the half to take a 9-2 lead. Hendrix would extend its lead to nine in the third quarter before Shine scored from Maher in the late stages of the quarter.
Orr added his second goal in the fourth quarter. Grise's first career tally came off a pass from Lelito with 2:57 to play. Lelito later added a goal off a feed from Maher for the final margin.
Trine wraps up its stretch of four consecutive road games Wednesday, Mar. 22 at Concordia Chicago. Face-off is scheduled for 5 p.m.
