Thunder Continue Early Season Success With Win Against Hanover

HANOVER, IND.  --  The Trine University men's lacrosse team grabbed its third-straight win to start the season with a 13-7 win against Hanover College in a non-conference game at Alumni Stadium in Hanover, Ind.

Junior Matt Zanichelli (Rolling Meadows, Ill./William Fremd) led the team in scoring with four goals on the afternoon.  Fellow junior Jarod Schepp (Oconomowoc, Wis./Kettle Moraine) also had a multi-goal game with three markers and also added an assist to finish with a total of five points.

Six other players ended the game with a goal in senior Brett Husar (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North), juniors Dave Keptner (Midland, Mich./H.H. Dow), Tyler Corless (St. Clair Shores, Mich./De La Salle), sophomore Brian Morris (Metamora, Mich./Lapeer) and freshmen Andrew Douglas (Liberty Twp., Ohio/Lakota East) and Noah Markus (Woodburg, Minn./East Ridge).

Rounding out the point scorers was junior Brandon Matuszczak (Hoffman Estates, Ill./William Fremd) who tallied an assist for one point.

Keptner led the team in ground balls with six and also had a team-best three caused turnovers.  Freshman Brandon Clark (Liberty Twp., Ohio/Lakota East) was second in ground balls with five and Morris was third with four.

In net, junior Anthony Marasco (Naperville, Ill./Nequa Valley) got his third win of the season after making 11 saves on 18 shots faced in 60 minutes of action.

Trine (3-0) trailed after the first quarter as Hanover (1-3) tallied the first four goals of the period.  The Thunder then got on the board with a little under four minutes to play when Schepp found the back of the net for the first time in the contest and narrowed the deficit to three goals after the first 15 minutes, 4-1.

In the second quarter, Trine outscored Hanover by a 4-1 margin that started with a pair of scores from Morris and Keptner at the 12:33 and 9:59 minute marks to pull the Thunder to within a point, 4-3.  The Panthers added a goal about a minute-and-a-half later to extend the margin to two goals before Douglas and Schepp struck before the end of the half to even the game at 5-5 heading into the locker rooms.

Coming out of the locker rooms, Trine scored five times to complete a run of seven unanswered goals going back to the second period to grab a 10-5 advantage.  Three of the five goals to start the third frame came off the stick of Zanichelli and were all scored within the opening five minutes.  Markus and Husar tallied the other two goals within 30 seconds apart.  Hanover tallied goals at the 6:09 and 4:57 marks to end the Trine scoring run and made it a three-goal game heading into the fourth quarter.

The Thunder put the game out of reach by scoring the only goals in the fourth quarter.  Corless got the scoring started with 10:35 to go in the game and was followed by Schepp's third and final goal just before the nine-minute mark to make it a 12-7 game.  Zanichelli then capped his high-scoring performance with his fourth goal with 5:42 to play to end the scoring and send Trine to a 13-7 victory.

Trine will next travel to Rock Island, Ill. to take on Augustana College on Saturday, Mar. 7 at Thorson-Lucken Field.  The game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. EST.
