Thunder Hang Close with Britons

ANGOLA, Ind. – The Trine University men's lacrosse team kept it close against Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) leading Albion College, but ultimately fell by the score of 23-15.

The Thunder took advantage of an early penalty to score the first goal of the game. Sophomore Charlie Anderson scored the goal with freshman Peter Piccillo adding an assist. The teams played back and forth lacrosse for the next four minutes before the visitors finally responded and tied the game at one.

Trine retook the lead with just over seven minutes remaining in the quarter. This time Piccillo got the man-up goal with junior Collin Custer adding the assist. The next three goals went to the Britons as they built a 4-2 lead.

Senior Andrew Douglas scored the Thunder's last goal of the quarter to pull back within one at 4-3. Albion then scored the final goal of the period to take a 5-3 lead into the first intermission.

The two teams traded goals over the first half of the second quarter, each scoring three. Custer, Piccillo and freshman Justin Scheberle each scored one of the team's goal during the stretch while junior Klein Burkholder added an assist.

Albion pulled away in the final seven minutes of the half, outscoring the Thunder 5-1 and taking a 13-7 lead into halftime. Senior Noah Markus scored the lone goal of the stretch for Trine.

The two teams matched each other in the third quarter, each scoring five goals and building the score to 18-12. Anderson, Burkholder, Markus, sophomore Patrick Doyle and classmate Zachary Norris each scored for the Thunder in the quarter. Anderson added an assist.

Albion scored five goals in the fourth quarter, pulling away from Trine who scored three, to make the final score 23-15. Markus scored two more goals during the period and senior Jack Konicek scored the final goal of the game.

Markus led the team with four goals with both Piccillo and Anderson finishing second on the team with two goals and an assist each. Defensively Scheberle led the way with three caused turnovers while Konicek had ten groundballs.

The Thunder fall to 9-3 overall and 1-3 in MIAA play following the loss to the Britons, who remain the final undefeated team in the MIAA. Trine has a weekend off before returning to play by traveling to Adrian College on Wednesday, April 26. The game is set to start at 7 p.m.
