Thunder Earn Convincing Win at Staten Island

NEW YORK, N.Y.-- The Trine men's soccer team earned a convincing 3-1 victory over the College of Staten Island Monday afternoon at the CSI Soccer Complex.

The Thunder outshot the Dolphins by a 17-9 margin and scored two second half goals after CSI had scored an equalizer. Nick Lang (Indianapolis, Ind./Cathedral), Mason Pelphrey (Portsmouth, Ohio/Clay) and Karston Shephard (Plainfield, Ind./Plainfield) all scored for the Thunder. Nicholas Bacarella scored the Dolphins' lone goal. Trine improved to 1-0-1 on the season. The College of Staten Island fell to 0-2 with the loss.

Lang got the Thunder on the board just 13:47 into the contest on a through-ball from Mac Green (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton). Lang took the pass and deposited it top-shelf for his first goal of the season, and second of his career. Trine would take that 1-0 lead into the half.

Bacarella scored just over 11 minutes into the second half to tie the score. Aldair Ramirez picked up the assist. That was all the Dolphins would muster against Trine keeper Chris Stewart (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester), who made one save in 81:26 of playing time. Ian Jindrich (Aurora, Ill./Metea Valley) made two saves to close out the match.

Pelphrey's goal at the 64:54 mark would prove to be the game-winner. The goal was the first of the freshman's Trine career. The goal was part of a strong effort for Pelphrey that saw him finish with three shots on goal.

Shephard added an insurance goal at 75:51 on a penalty kick. Shephard's goal was the third of his Thunder career.

Trine will travel to Franklin College Saturday, Sep. 6 where they will face Transylvania at 4:00 p.m.
