ANGOLA, IND.-- Brian Kurtz's goal in the closing minutes lifted Defiance to a 1-0 victory over Trine in game one of the Ketner Classic, held Friday afternoon at Weaver Field.
Kurtz's header off a pass from the corner by Ross Retherford snuck just inside the far post with 2:03 remaining in the contest to give the Yellow Jackets the victory. Trine outshot Defiance 11-5, but Jackets goalkeeper Ollie Davis made five saves to earn the shutout. Chris Stewart (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester) made two saves for the Thunder. Trine falls to 2-2-1 on the season. Defiance got in the win column and is now 1-3-1 overall.
Brec Musselman (Noblesville, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) provided a spart for Trine, generating a couple scoring chances and getting off two shots. The Thunder generated five corner-kick opportunities to four for Defiance.
The Ketner Classic concludes tomorrow. Defiance will face Adrian at 2:30 p.m., while Trine concludes the Classic with a match against Manchester at 5 p.m.
