Thunder Fall to #7 Hope in Overtime

ANGOLA, IND.-- The Trine men's soccer team pushed no. 7 Hope to overtime, but the Flying Dutchmen got the best of the Thunder in the extra stanza to earn the 1-0 victory Wednesday afternoon at Weaver Field.

Logan Sikkenga headed home a cross from Josh Hagene just 1:17 into overtime, sneaking the header in just under the crossbar for the game-winner. The goal came with the Dutch playing up a man following a Thunder red card late in regulation. Hope outshot Trine by a 16-12 margin, with Ethan Beswick making two saves in net to earn the shutout. The Flying Dutchmen improve to 6-1 overall, and open MIAA play 1-0. Trine falls to 3-3-1 overall, 0-1 in conference matches.

Hope outshot Trine 7-4 in the first half, but Trine keeper Chris Stewart (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester) stopped all five attempts on net. The Thunder defense limited additional scoring opportunities, breaking up numerous cross attempts into the box.

Stewart had another solid game in net for the Thunder, stopping seven of eight Hope shots on net. After today's match, Stewart is tied for second in the MIAA with an .829 save percentage.

The two teams played even in the second half, with each team mustering eight shots. Trine produced three corner kicks to two for the Dutch after halftime. Hope held a 5-4 advantage in corner opportunies in the match.

Neither team was able to break through in regulation, which set the stage for Sikkenga's goal in overtime.

Trine returns to action this Saturday. Sept. at Olivet. The match is slated to get underway at 2:30 p.m.
