ANGOLA, IND.-- The Trine men's soccer team came out on top of a back-and-forth battle with MIAA-foe Albion, as the Thunder earned a 3-2 victory over the Britons Tuesday afternoon at Weaver Field.
Dalton Mullennix (Fruitport, Mich./Fruitport), Nick Lang (Indianapolis, Ind./Cathedral) and Ryan Goodhew (Mason, Ohio/Mason) each scored goals for the Thunder. Trine outshot Albion by a 16-14 margin. Chris Stewart (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester) made five saves to earn his 15th career victory in net. Mike Tolkacz scored a pair of unassisted goals to lead Albion. Trine improves to 4-8-1 overall and 1-6 in the MIAA.
Mullennix got the Thunder on the board just 13:15 into the contest. Karston Shephard (Plainfield, Ind./Plainfield) played a long pass through the middle of the Briton defense, which Mullennix corralled on the run to beat the defender. Mullennix finished with a shot into the corner of the net to make the score 1-0.
Shephard's assist was the 13th of his career, which is the second-most among players at Trine in the Division III era (2004-present).
Tolkacz evened up the score at one-apiece off a Trine turnover. Tolkacz ripped a one-timer into the top corner of the net from 25 yards out. That was all the scoring the first half would see.
The Thunder took the lead on Lang's second goal of the season. The junior controlled a loose ball off a turnover, settled and fired a rocket just inside the post to make the score 2-1.
The Britons evened it back up on Tolkacz's second-goal of the afternoon, which came off a loose-ball in the box with just under 18 minutes to play.
Goodhew's game-winner came with 10:20 remaining in the contest. The Thunder gained control and, after some excellent ball movement, Mac Green (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton) found Goodhew with a short touch-pass. Goodhew was able to bury the shot inside the far post for hist first-career game-winner.
Trine returns to action this Saturday, Oct. 11 when they travel to Hope for a match at 7 p.m.
