Second Half Goals Lead Marian past Trine

CHICAGO, Ill.-- A pair of second half goals lead Marian (Wis.) to a 3-1 victory over Trine in a neutral-site contest Saturday afternoon at Stuart Field.

The two teams battled to an even 1-1 draw in the first half, but second half goals by Gustavo Carmona and Danny Heerhold proved to be the difference in the game. Freshman Brandon Villanueva (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) scored his first collegiate goal to provide the offensive highlight for the Thunder. Trine outshot the Sabres by a 14-9 margin. The loss evened Trine's record at 1-1. Marian is now 2-0.

Ian Chacon saved eight of Trine's nine shots on goal to earn the victory. Ian Jindrich (Aurora, Ill./Metea Valley) made two saves in net for the Thunder.

Marian scored on the first shot of the game just over three minutes in. Alonso Fragoso scored off a feed from Zach Peltonen to make the score 1-0 3:11 into the contest.

Villanueva's first-career goal evened the score at the 24:05 mark of the first half. Nick Lang (Indianapolis, Ind./Cathedral) picked up the assist. Lang has five points in the first two matches of the season.

Carmona's goal broke the one-all stalemate 17:16 into the second half. Israel Tovar picked up the assist. Heerhold added an insurance tally just under 10 minutes later off a pass from Jeroham Duran for the final 3-1 margin.

Trine concludes play in Chicago tomorrow with a match against Illinois Tech. The match between the Thunder and Scarlet Hawks is slated for 4:30 p.m.
