Thunder Drop Opening Game of Tournament

FRANKLIN, Ind.-- The Trine men's soccer team was defeated by Franklin, 2-1 in the Daniel Schuetz Community Classic Saturday afternoon at Faught Stadium.

Ben Moricz (Valparaiso, Ind./Wheeler) scored at the 72:14 mark of the match to tie the score after the Thunder faced a first half deficit, but the Grizzlies answered with the game-winner just under a minute later to earn the victory. Antonie Gioe scored the game-winning goal for Franklin, while Austin Storm scored the other tally. Trine fell to 3-2 on the season. The Grizzlies improved to 1-3 overall.

Storm tallied for the goal of the contest just 4:44 into the match. Austin Fundenberger picked up the assist off the corner kick.

That was all the scoring the match would see until Moricz scored his unassisted goal with just under 18 minutes to play in the contest. The goal was Moricz's second of the season.

Gioe had the answer just 47 seconds later with what would prove to be the game-winner. Mason Krupa was credited with the assist.

Trine outshot Franklin by a 16-10 margin. Grizzlies keeper Cody Chapman made six saves to earn the victory. Three of those saves preserved the lead late as the Thunder were pressuring to attempt to tie the score. Ian Jindrich (Aurora, Ill./Metea Valley) made four saves in net for Trine.

The Daniel Schuetz Community Classic concludes tomorrow as the Thunder face Transylvania at noon.
