Thunder Shut Down Comets for Victory

Angola, Ind. – The Trine men's soccer team defeated Olivet, 2-0 to earn its second win in a row and second win in the MIAA on the season Wednesday afternoon at Weaver Field.

Ben Moricz (Valparaiso, Ind./Wheeler) scored in the second half to give the Thunder the 1-0 lead. The assists came from Chris Short (McCordsville,Ind. / Pendleton Heights) and Jacob Nantz (Galesburg, Mich. / Galesburg Augusta). Nick Lang (Indianapolis, Ind. / Cathedral) scored Trine's second goal of the match late in the second off a give and go from Brandon Villanueva (St. Charles, III / St. Charles East) to give the Thunder the 2-0 victory. Trine improved to 5-5-1 overall and 2-3 in conference matches.  Olivet fell to 1-10 overall, 0-5 in MIAA play.

The first half ended with a standstill between the teams. A would-be goal by Lang was reversed due to a foul in the first three minutes of the first half.

In the opening minutes of the second half, Thunder goalie Ian Jindrich (Aurora, III. / Metea Valley), had two saves back-to-back off a penalty kick to keep the game scoreless. Jindrich made four saves to earn his third-career shutout and his second in conference play.

At the 57-minute mark of the contest, Moricz got the Thunder on the board. It was the senior's third goal on the season off the assist by Short and Nantz. A long throw-in from Short was directed by Nantz to VanBelle for the goal.

Lang picked up his fifth goal of the season with his goal at the 85-minute mark of the match to give the Thunder an insurance goal. Villanueva;s assist was his first of the season.

Trine outshot Olivet by an 18-15 margin.

The Thunder return to action this Saturday, Oct. 3 when they travel to Hope for a night game at 7 p.m.
