Men's Soccer Falls to no. 4 Calvin

ANGOLA, Ind.-- The Trine men's soccer team fell to no. 4 Calvin, 5-0 in MIAA-action Saturday afternoon at Weaver Field.

Sam Hanover tallied twice to lead the Knights, who scored four goals in the first half. Stephan Hooker added a goal and an assist, while Nick Groenewald and Micah Beard also scored for Calvin. Nick Giantsopolous made three saves to earn the shutout. Trine fell to 5-8-1 overall, 2-6 in the MIAA. The Knights improved to 12-0-1 overall and 8-0 in conference play.

All four of Calvin's first half goals came in the first 21:18 of the match. Hanover scored on a pair of breakaways 36 seconds apart, with Hooker and Mitch Stark picking up assists on the tallies.

Groenewald made the score 3-0 off a header pass from Taylor Pruis. Hooker headed in a long service from Isky Van Doorne 2:49 later to give the Knights the four-goal advantage.

Beard added the final goal in the second half off a corner kick from Matt Hinds.

Calvin outshot Trine 18-12. Ian Jindrich (Aurora, Ill./Metea Valley) made seven saves for the Thunder.

Trine returns to action this Wednesday, Oct. 14 at Adrian. The match is slated to begin at 7 p.m.
