LEXINGTON, KY. -- Freshman Tristen Ortiz (Wayland, Mich./Wayland) scored two goals to help lead the Trine University men's soccer team to a 3-1 win against Muskingum University in its first game of the Transy Soccer Showcase hosted by Transylvania (Ky.) University to kick off the 2017 season.
Trine (1-0) outshot Muskingum (0-1), 5-4, in the first half and took advantage of its opportunities scoring the first goal of the period when junior Kurt Wysocki (Avon/St. Edward) scored just under six minutes in to give the Thunder a 1-0 lead.
Just under seven minutes to go in the first, Ortiz netted his first goal of the game at the 38:18 minute mark with a helper from freshman Chris Clemens (Angola, Ind./Angola), that increased the margin to 2-0 in favor of Trine at the intermission.
Muskingum got on the board during the 80th minute of the second half on an unassisted marker to cut the Thunder lead in half, 2-1.
Trine then put the game away in the late minutes of the contest when Ortiz found the back of the net for the second time, this time with an unassisted goal, at the 87:53 mark off of a goalie deflection that increased the margin back to a pair of goals.
The Thunder defense held the Fighting Muskies without a shot in the final minutes as Trine went on to claim its first victory of the season by a final of 3-1.
Freshman goalkeeper Connor Werschem (Muskegon, Mich./Fruitport) played all 90 minutes in net and tallied five saves while allowing just the lone goal.
Trine will wrap-up its two-day stay in Kentucky with a non-conference matchup against Berea (Ky.) College tomorrow (Sunday, Sept. 3). The game is scheduled to begin at noon.
