Trine Men's Soccer Blanks Berea to Begin Season 2-0

LEXINGTON, KY.  --  The Trine University men's soccer team posted a 4-0 shutout against Berea (Ky.) College to end the season-opening Transylvania Soccer Showcase with another win.

Trine (2-0) outshot Berea (0-2), 30-2, for the game and senior Mason Pelphrey (Portsmouth, Ohio/Clay) was credited with a pair of goals to lead the Thunder offense.

Approaching the midpoint of the first half, Trine got on the board when Pelphey found the back of the net on an unassisted goal, his first of the game, at the 20:36 minute mark making the score 1-0.  The goal ended up being the only scoring in the period as the Thunder led 1-0 at the break.

Trine continued to put shots on net in the second half which resulted in three more goals beginning with a marker by freshman Jonathan Slone (Troy, Ohio/Troy Christian) during the 67th minute to increase the margin to 2-0.

About two-and-a-half minutes later, Pelphrey scored his second goal.  This time, with an assist from freshman Beau Hill (Allen, Texas/Allen) during the 71st minute.  The final score of the game came off the foot of Trine's Kyle Hoyt (Galesburg, Mich./Galesburg-Augusta) at the 80:16 mark as the Thunder went on to cruise to the 4-0 victory.

The duo of goalkeepers Connor Werschem (Muskegon, Mich./Fruitport) and Quinn O'Brien (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence North) split time in net with Werschem getting the start, and the win, playing the first 45 minutes allowing no goals.  O'Brien came on to play the second half and maintained the shutout with no goals given up while making one save.

Trine will travel to Defiance, Ohio for a matchup against Defiance College on Wednesday, Sept. 9.  The game is set to begin at 4 p.m.
