ANGOLA, IND. -- After giving up two goals in the first half, the Trine University men's soccer team looked to rally in the second period, but would fall short of Kalamazoo, 2-1, in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association action at the Weaver Soccer Field.
Kalamazoo (3-4-1, 2-2 MIAA) wasted no time getting on the board, netting a goal just 1:51 into the contest to take the early lead. Nearing the end of the half, the Hornets tacked on another marker, this time during the 32nd minute, to lead 2-0 at the break.
Trine (3-2-2, 1-2-1 MIAA) took three shots in the opening period with the only shot on net coming off the foot of junior Ben Moricz (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso) that ended in a save.
The Thunder cut the deficit in half in the opening minutes of the second frame when senior Mason Pelphrey (Portsmouth, Ohio/Clay) increased his team-leading goal total to five at the 57:40 minute mark to make it a 2-1 game.
Pelphrey's goal turned out to be lone score in the final 45 minutes as Trine could not tally the game-tying goal allowing Kalamazoo to hang on for the one-goal defeat.
In net for Trine, sophomore Quinn O'Brien (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence North) played the entire game and had nine saves.
Trine will host Hope (Mich.) College in a MIAA game on Wednesday, Sept. 27 at Weaver Field. Kick-off is scheduled for 4 p.m.
