Late Goal Hands Men's Soccer Loss Against Hope

HOLLAND, MICH.  --  It wasn't until the 73rd minute that the stalemate was broken, but it was the Trine University men's soccer team who fell on the losing end of a 1-0 decision against Hope (Mich.) College in a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association game in Holland, Mich.

Hope (7-7-2, 6-4-2 MIAA) outshot Trine (5-5-5, 3-5-4 MIAA), 8-2, in the first period and would put three of its shots on net, but the combined efforts of Trine netminders William Macedo (Elkhart, Ind./Memorial) and Connor Werschem (Muskegon, Mich./Fruitport) denied the Flying Dutchmen a goal and left the two teams in a 0-0 tie at intermission.

The second half saw a pair of early scoring chances for Trine off of shots by freshman Jonathan Slone (Troy, Ohio/Troy Christian) and junior Kurt Wysocki (Avon, Ohio/St. Edward), but both shots were kept out of the back of the net by the Hope goalkeeper.  The scoreless affair continued until a little past the midway point of the half when Hope managed to get a shot past Werschem at the 72:13 mark to go ahead, 1-0.

The Thunder tallied three shots in the final minutes of the game, but all shots did not end up on net as the Dutchmen hung on for the 1-0 win.

Macedo began the game in net for Trine and played 26:16 minutes allowing no goals and had two saves.  Werschem came on to replace Macedo and played the final 63:44, giving up just the lone goal while making four saves.

Trine will travel to Adrian, Mich. for a MIAA contest against Adrian College on Wednesday, Oct. 25.  Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
