Trine Beats Edgewood in Season Opener

ANGOLA, IND.  --  Senior Ben Moricz (Niles, Mich./Niles) and sophomore Jonathan Slone (Troy, Ohio/Troy Christian) both scored two goals to help lead the Trine University men's soccer team to a 7-1 win against Edgewood (Wis.) College in the season and home opener at Weaver Field.

Trine (1-0) got the scoring going early, just 5:56 into the first half, when Nooh Aljabaly (Coldwater, Mich./Coldwater) scored his first goal as a member of the Thunder program for the 1-0 advantage.  A little over three minutes later, Trine tallied another goal when Moricz got a header by the Edgewood (1-1) goalkeeper for his first goal of the game to increase the margin to 2-0.  Aljabaly was credited with an assist on the Moricz goal.

Edgewood got on the scoreboard 23 seconds later with a goal of its own to cut the deficit in half, 2-1, at the 9:24 mark.

The lone goal by the Eagles turned out to be the only score of the game as Trine piled on five unanswered markers the rest of the way that started with Moricz's second goal of the contest during the 18th minute, with an assist from J.T. Plavchak (Goshen, Ind./Goshen), to make it a 3-1 game.

The Thunder tacked on two more goals before the end of the half which were both scored by Slone.  At the 24:14 mark, Slone netted his first goal of the day, that also included a helper from Connor Malmquist (Valparaiso, Ind./Morgan Township), to put the Thunder out in front, 4-1.  Slone then scored the final goal of the period during the 28th minute on an unassisted score as Trine went into the locker rooms with a lead of 5-1.

Just over the halfway point of the second half, Brian Morris scored his first collegiate goal during the 68th minute on a free kick.  The final goal of the game came off the foot of Trine's Kyle Wainscott (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence North) on a penalty kick opportunity at the 81:46 mark.  The seven goals scored by Trine were more than enough to secure the victory as the Thunder cruised to the 7-1 final.

In net for Trine, Taylor Medina (Mill Creek, Ind./Rochester) started the game and picked up the win after playing 74:09 minutes and gave up just the lone goal while making three saves.  Nolan Caudill (Middletown, Ohio/Monroe) played the final 15:51 and tallied two saves and allowed no goals.

Trine will next travel to Defiance, Ohio for a non-conference game against Defiance College on Tuesday, Sept. 4.  The game is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
