Trine Falls to Adrian on Penalty Kicks in MIAA Tournament

ADRIAN, MICH.  --  Third-seeded Trine University men's soccer team had its Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Tournament run come to an end on penalty kicks against second-seeded Adrian (Mich.) College in Adrian, Mich.

The two teams battled to a 1-1 tied after regulation and two overtime periods to force the contest to be decided by penalty kicks.  Both teams capitalized on its first two penalty kick opportunities to stay even at 2-2.  On the next two attempts, each team swapped saves, but the difference would come in the fifth round of attempts.  Adrian took over the lead with a successful try and then came up with a game-deciding save on Trine's attempt to come away with the 3-2 shootout win.

Neither team scored any goals in the first half resulting in a 0-0 tie after the first 45 minutes.

The second half saw Trine (13-3-2) strike early with a goal by junior Nooh Aljabaly (Coldwater, Mich./Coldwater) just a minute-and-a-half in to give the Thunder a 1-0 margin.  Twelve minutes later, Adrian (8-7-1) evened the game at 1-1 on a header that found the back of the net during the 59th minute.  The two goals ended up being the only scoring the rest of regulation to force overtime.

Both teams had scoring opportunities in the overtime periods, but solid netminding and defense by both squads left the game in a 1-1 tie to send it into PK's.

Senior Kyle Wainscott (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence North) and freshman Brian Morris (Metamora, Mich./Lapeer) scored on the first two penalty kicks for Trine and Aljabaly tallied the other goal.

In net, freshman Taylor Medina (Mill Creek, Ind./Rochester) played the entire game and recorded four saves.
