Thunder Drop First Conference Match 2-0 to Calvin

ANGOLA, Ind. – The Trine University men's soccer team was defeated by the 21st ranked team in NCAA DIII, Calvin University on Tuesday, 2-0.

Trine was wearing their pink uniforms in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month in October.

The loss drops the Thunder to 5-5-0 overall, and this being the first Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) game makes them 0-1 in conference play. The Knights are 9-2-2 with the win and claim victory in their first league match.

Calvin put constant pressure on the short-handed Thunder back row in the opening minutes, drawing multiple offsides calls. The first shot of the game at the 13-minute mark was turned away by the goalkeeper Troy Saylor [Caledonia, Mich. / Caledonia].

Saylor made saves on the next three shots from the Knights at 20, 24, and 28 minutes as well, one of which was questioned whether it was through a hole in the top of the net or tipped over the top.

Tyler Murphy [Greenfield, Ind. / Greenfield Central], Alhasan Yahya [Melvindale, Mich. / Melvindale] and Abraham Antar [Aurora, Ill. / Metea Valley] put together a scoring threat for the Thunder, but none of their shots were able to find their way.

All at once, Calvin was able to string together two goals, one in the 35th and one in the 36th minute of action to give the Knights a sizeable advantage.

Yahya took a team-high four shots in the match, but unfortunately for Trine none of the nine total shots on the day hit the back of the net in the 2-0 shutout.

The challenges keep coming on the pitch for the Thunder, as they travel to NCAA DI Indiana University on Saturday, October 9 at 7:30 pm. That matchup will appear on B1G Plus.
