Tyler Murphy Tabbed MIAA Athlete of the Week Following Seven-Point Week

FREELAND, Mich. – Trine University men's soccer forward Tyler Murphy [Greenfield, Ind. / Greenfield Central] has been named Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Athlete of the Week as the men's soccer offensive player.

Murphy tallied seven points this week with three goals and one assist in a 2-0 week for the Thunder. The wins helped Trine to clinch a home match in the MIAA First Round this postseason.

The sophomore scored the game-tying goal after falling behind to Adrian College 1-0 at home on Tuesday. He was assisted on the play by Will Burba [Cincinnati, Ohio / Cincinnati La Salle], who got a touch on a loose ball in front of the net. The Thunder would go on to score another goal just two minutes later and went on to win 3-1.

Murphy notched two goals and an assist against Albion College on Saturday to clinch a postseason home match. He scored his 12th and 13th goals of the 2021 season with one in the 16th minute and one in the 48th minute. He contributed to a third goal with an assist to Joey Donovan [Aurora, Ill. / Metea Valley] to seal the deal.

A win in the team's regular season finale at Alma College on Wednesday, October 27 and a loss by Hope College would set up a tiebreaker for the number three spot in the league table.
