Men's Soccer Takes Student Princes to Class in 3-0 Victory

ANGOLA, Ind. – The Trine University men's soccer team posted a dominating performance against visiting Heidelberg University sending them away with a 3-0 defeat. The Thunder outshot the Student Princes 29-1 in the contest and never allowed the opposition to mount a legitimate offensive attack, keeping the team from recording a single shot on goal.

The home team put themselves on the board in the 18th minute of play. Junior Alhusain Yahya began the sequence by winning the ball from the defense in the penalty area and firing a quick shot at the keeper. The rebound bounced out to the corner of the goal area for junior Tyler Murphy, who juked a defender and put the ball into the back of the net.

Just under 15 minutes later, the Thunder set up with a free kick just outside the penalty area. Murphy took the attempt and caught the defense napping putting it nearly into the left side of the goal. Instead it ricocheted off the post back into the goal area, where freshman Jay Stevens collected the ball and forced a save from the keeper. Another rebound went wide and freshman Braden Estep was able to capitalize on a final shot, giving the team a 2-0 lead.

Trine recorded 19 shots in the first half alone, including eight on net, and took the lead into intermission.

The second half saw the team continue to control the ball and stay mostly in their offensive zone. They recorded another ten shots with five coming on net.

It took until the 87th minute for the team to add to their lead. This time sophomore Luke Kearns passed the ball sharply to junior Abraham Antar who fired his shot passed the keeper to build the lead to 3-0. That score would quickly go final with Trine recording their second win of the week.

The Thunder improve to 2-1 following the win. They will take the pitch again on Sunday, Sept. 11 when they host Benedictine (Ill.) University for a 1 p.m. contest.
