ANGOLA, Ind.-- Caleb Knust reached a career milestone as the Trine men's tennis team blanked Olivet, 9-0 in a non-conference match Wednesday afternoon at Angola Middle School.
With a 6-0, 6-1 victory in the no. 1 singles flight, Knust (Plainfield, Ind./Plainfield) became the first player in team history to record 50 singles victories in his career. The senior is a three-time All-MIAA performer. He has a career record of 50-11, good enough for an .820 winning percentage. Knust also teamed with Nick Cassidy (Archbold, Ohio/Perrysburg) for a victory at no. 2 doubles.
Four players picked up their first victories as members of the Thunder. Garrett Baysinger (Brazil, Ind./Rockville) and Colin Couch (Batavia, Ohio/Glen Este) each picked up wins by scores of 6-1, 6-1. Bryce Hernly (Indianapolis, Ind./Ben Davis) and Zach Richardson (Muncie, Ind./Delta) each won by scores of 6-0, 6-0.
Judson Quinn (Russiaville, Ind./Western) and Victor Flynn (Grosse Pointe, Mich./Grosse Pointe South) added an 8-0 victory at no. 2 doubles. Quinn also picked up a victory in straight sets in singles play.
Zach Howe (Pendleton, Ind./Pendleton Heights) and Blake Trusty (Fremont, Ind./Fremont) also earned a shutout victory in the no. 3 doubles flight. Each player picked up their first-career collegiate doubles win with the effort.
Trine improved to 2-0 on the fall season. Olivet was playing its first match since 1995 after reinstating its program beginning this fall. The match was counted as non-conference. The two teams will face each other in conference play in the spring.
