Thunder Open MIAA Season with Sweep of Olivet

ANGOLA, Ind.-- The Trine men's tennis team opened MIAA play with a 6-0 sweep of Olivet Saturday afternoon in Keith E. Busse/Steel Dynamics Athletic Recreation Center.

Eight different players contributed to the victory for the Thunder. Starting things off were a pair of victories in doubles play, highlighted by the performance of Victor Flynn (Grosse Pointe, Mich. / Grosse Pointe South) and Judson Quinn (Russiaville, Ind. / Western) in the No. 1 court. The duo shut out their opponents 8-0. Flynn and Quinn have won three-straight matches and are 5-3 in dual matches this season.

Nathan Scroggins (Hanover, Ind. / Southwestern) and Steve Gierek (Shipshewana, Ind. / Westview) followed with an 8-2 win in teh second contested doubles match. The victory was the first varsity win of the season for each player. The Comets defaulted the third doubles match.

Colin Couch (Batavia, Ohio / Glen Este) and Bryce Hernly (Indianapolis, Ind. / Ben Davis) each remained unbeaten in singles play for the Thunder. Couch improved to 4-0 by shutting out his opponent in straight sets. Hernly also won in straight sets for his second victory of the season. 

Nick Cassidy (Archbold, Ohio / Archbold) and Blake Trusty (Fremont, Ind. / Fremont) also added singles wins for Trine. Trusty improved to 4-2 on the season by winning each set 6-1. Cassidy notched his second win of the year with 6-3, 6-1 victories.

Trine improved to 5-3 overall and 1-0 in the MIAA. Olivet fell to 1-5 overall, 0-1 in conference matches.

The Thunder continue conference play Tuesday, Apr. 5 at Hope. Match time is set for 4 p.m.
