Men's Tennis Clinch First Appearance in Modern MIAA Tournament

ANGOLA, IND. -- The Trine University men's tennis team came away with an 8-1 victory over visiting Alma College to clinch the fifth position in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) standings.

Due to Kalamazoo College being ineligible for MIAA postseason competition the Thunder will participate as the fourth seed in the upcoming tournament for the first time since the field was narrowed to four teams in 2012.

Trine started the contest right picking up three victories in the doubles portion in of the competition. Both seniors Victor Flynn (Grosse Pointe, Mich. / Grosse Pointe South) and Judson Quinn (Russiaville, Ind. / Western) in the No. 1 match and freshman Isaac Everitt (Scottsburg, Ind. / Scottsburg) and senior Bryce Hernly (Indianapolis, Ind. / Ben Davis) in the No. 3 match came away with hard-fought victories defeating their opponents 9-8 (7-3). In the No. 2 match, junior Blake Trusty (Fremont, Ind. / Fremont) and sophomore Jacob Weiss (Richmond, Ind. / Richmond) won with the score of 8-5.

In the singles portion, the Thunder allowed just one win to the opposition taking five matches for the 8-1 victory. Flynn took the No. 1 match with scores of 6-1, 6-3, while Hernly took the No. 6 match 6-0, 6-4. Trusty picked up the victory in the No. 3 match with scores of 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) and Weiss also utilized a tiebreaker to pick up the No. 5 match 7-6 (7-3), 6-1. Everitt picked up the final victory in the No. 4 match with scores of 7-5, 6-1.

Trine will compete in the first round of the MIAA tournament by traveling to Calvin College on Thursday, May 3. The time of the match has yet to be announced.
