Men's Tennis Downs Grizzlies

ANGOLA, Ind. -- The Trine University men's tennis team opened their home slate of games today by defeating visiting Franklin College 7-2. The contest featured several matches that were hotly contested affairs despite the lopsided final score.

The Thunder took two of three doubles matches to start the day with a 2-1 lead. Senior Jaxon Davis (Angola, Ind. / Angola) and freshman Caleb Morris (Terre Haute, Ind. / Terre Haute South Vigo) took the No. 2 match by the score of 8-6 to give the team their first point of the day. Junior Drew Dixon (Fishers, Ind. / Fishers) and freshman Cole Goodman (Eagle, Mich. / Grand Ledge) came up with the other doubles win in the No. 3 match by the score of 8-2. The No. 1 doubles team came up just a little short falling 8-7 (7-2) to the top team from Franklin.

Three members of the Thunder finished the day undefeated after picking up wins in the singles portion of the match as well. Goodman took the No. 1 match 6-2, 6-2 and Morris handily won the No. 6 match with scores of 6-0, 6-4. Dixon became the final undefeated member of the team winning the No. 5 match 7-5, 6-2. 

The team then picked up a pair of victories from the No. 1 doubles team in the singles portion of the contest. Junior Aaron Streit (New Paris, Ind. / Fairfield) needed a tiebreaker but came away with a win in the No. 2 match 6-1, 7-6 (7-0). Then sophomore Ryan Smith (Peru, Ind. / Peru) came away with a 6-1, 6-1 win in the No. 4 match to seal the victory.

The Thunder remain undefeated at 2-0 following today's win. They will continue their season when they travel to face Goshen College on Wednesday, Sept. 15. The match is set to start at 4:30 p.m.
