Eagles Win Tight Match with Men's Tennis

ORLANDO, Fla. -- The Trine University men's tennis team came up just short in their opening match of the 2022 portion of their schedule, falling to University of Northwestern (Minn.) by the score of 5-4.

The team picked up their first victory of the day in the doubles portion of the contest, but would head into singles down 2-1. The win came in the No. 3 match where senior Jaxon Davis (Angola, Ind. / Angola) and freshman Caleb Morris (Terre Haute, Ind. / Terre Haute South Vigo) defeated the Eagles 8-6.

The Thunder worked on their comeback during the singles portion of the day. Junior Aaron Streit (New Paris, Ind. / Fairfield) and sophomore Ryan Smith (Peru, Ind. / Peru) picked up quick wins in their matches to offset a pair of quick losses in the No. 1 and No. 4 matches. Streit won the No. 2 match with scores of 6-2, 6-1 and Smith won the No. 5 match 6-3, 6-3.

Trine needed to win both of the remaining matches to take the day. Morris was able to win a tight match in No. 6 singles with scores of 6-3, 4-6, 10-7 to tie the contest at four. But Davis would come up just shy of the win with scores of 6-2, 3-6, 7-10.

The Thunder fall to 3-3 following the loss. The team will continue their spring break trick when they faceoff with King's (Pa.) College tomorrow, Tuesday, March 7.
