Men's Tennis Sweeps Spartans

NORTH MANCHESTER, Ind. -- The Trine University men's tennis team started the season on a high note after sweeping their hosts from Manchester University.

The dual was lopsided from beginning to end, with all three doubles matches ending with at least a six-point victory for the Thunder. In the No. 1 match the pair of sophomore Cole Goodman and senior Drew Dixon picked up the 8-2 win and in the No. 2 match senior Aaron Streit and junior Ryan Smith won with the same score. Sophomore Caleb Morris and freshman Elijah Schilthuis posted the most convincing victory with a score of 8-1.

More of the same was on the menu during the singles portion of the match. Three different members of the team picked up wins with scores of 6-1, 6-0, including Goodman in the No. 1 match, Streit in the No. 2 match and Smith in the No. 6 match. Dixon won the No. 4 match with scores of 6-0, 6-1, while Morris needed one more game to win his No. 5 match 6-0, 6-2. Schilthuis won the first singles match of his career in the No. 2 position 6-1, 6-3.

The team will continue their season when they travel to Franklin, Ind. on Saturday, September 10. Trine will faceoff in a doubleheader with matches against host Franklin College at 10 a.m. and fellow visitor Webster University at 2 p.m.
