Men's Tennis Secures Spot in MIAA Tournament

ADRIAN, Mich. – The Trine University men's tennis team secured their tenth win of the season by defeating Adrian College with a score of 7-2. The win secures the team a spot in the upcoming Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Tournament where they will compete as the four-seed.

The Thunder took two of the doubles matches to start the day with a 2-1 lead. Freshman Andrew Spirrison and senior Aaron Streit secured the No. 1 match with an 8-2 victory, the most lopsided of the doubles matches. Sophomore Cole Goodman and senior Drew Dixon followed up with an 8-4 win in the No. 2 match. The No. 3 match was a tightly contested contest, but freshmen Elijah Schilthuis and Nicholas Jen came up just short by the score of 7-8 (2-7).

Dixon went on to post the most convincing of the singles wins for the team, taking the No. 5 match with scores of 6-1, 6-2. Schilthuis needed just one more game to win the No. 3 match with scores of 6-2, 6-2 and then Spirrison needed one more again in the No. 2 match with scores of 6-3, 6-2. Streit had a closer match but still won in the No. 4 spot with scores of 7-5, 6-2.

Sophomore Caleb Morris in the No. 6 match recovered from a second set stumble by winning the super tiebreaker and giving the team their final point. The match ended with scores of 7-5, 3-6, 11-9 in favor of Morris.

After the win the Thunder improve to 10-5 overall and 3-2 in MIAA play. They secure a fourth-place finish in the MIAA standings with the win and along with the accompanying spot in the upcoming postseason tournament. They will finish off the MIAA portion of the regular season tomorrow, Wednesday, April 19 when they host Kalamazoo College. The match is scheduled to start at 4 p.m.
