Men's Tennis Sweeps Day at Franklin

FRANKLIN, Ind. – The Trine University men's tennis team picked up a pair of dual match victories in a day of competition hosted by Franklin College. The Thunder swept both matches 9-0, the first against their hosts and the second against Webster University.

The No. 1 doubles team of freshman Sammy Yin and sophomore Andrew Spirrison started the day with an 8-1 victory against the Grizzlies. Both Cole Goodman and Caleb Morris in the No. 2 match and Evan Nay and Nicholas Jen in the No. 3 match would pick up victories by the score of 8-4.

Sophomore Elijah Schilthuis had the most convincing of the singles victories taking the No. 4 match 6-0, 6-1. Yin needed just one more game to win the No. 1 match 6-2, 6-0 and Goodman took the No. 2 match 6-3, 6-0. Spirrison won the No. 3 match 6-4, 6-1 while Morris came away with a 6-1, 6-2 win in the No. 5 match. Jen had the closest of the wins during the dual with a 7-5, 6-2 victory in the No. 6 match.

Yin and Spirrison won their second doubles match of the day by the same score winning the 8-1 against the Gorloks. Jen and Nay improved in the No. 3 match with an 8-3 victory while Goodman and Morris needed an extra game to win the No. 2 match 8-5.

It was Goodman that recorded the most convincing victory of the singles portion of the Webster match, winning the No. 2 contest 6-1, 6-0. Jen came in just behind in the No. 6 match with a 6-0, 6-2 victory followed in turn by Morris with a 6-0, 6-3 win the No. 5 match. Schilthuis won the No. 4 match 6-2, 6-3 and Yin had a 6-3, 6-4 win in the No. 1 match. The closest of the dual was in the No. 3 match where Spirrison won 6-3, 7-5.

The Thunder remain unbeaten after the day of competition with a 3-0 record. They will make a quick turnaround by traveling to face Wooster tomorrow, Sunday, September 10. That match is set to start at 1 p.m.
