Sean, 18, a sophomore mechanical engineering major from Monroe, Mich., died Thursday when the truck he was driving was struck by a semi truck being towed by another semi.

"Our hearts break for Sean's family, friends and loved ones and we will keep them in our thoughts and prayers," said Earl D. Brooks II, Ph.D., Trine president. "Sean left a lasting impression on many and will be greatly missed."

Sean, who completed his freshman year at Trine just a few weeks ago, was a member of the track and field and cross country teams. In addition to consistently finishing among the top five Trine runners in cross country, he competed in long-distance events for the track and field team.

"We lost a great part of our team with the passing of Sean," said Tom Knudson, Director of Track and Field and Cross Country. "His outlook and  personality were uplifting when we were with him. His hard work, dedication, and commitment to making himself and everyone around him better are the legacy that he leaves with us. He and all of the young people that we coach leave a lasting impression on our program and our lives."

"Sean's impression will be felt and seen every day as we move forward. He was one of the pillars in making our program better, and we thank him for this. We were blessed to have had him for this short while, and he will always be with us. He is now, and will always will be, an inspiration to us all and to our program. We thank him for this. We will miss you, Sean."

The Trine University community sends condolences to Sean's family and friends.
