Thunder break Three School-Records in Trine Conditioner

ANGOLA, Ind.-- The Trine men's track and field team set three new school records in the season-opening Trine Conditioner, held Saturday at Keith E. Busse/Steel Dynamics Athletic Recreation Center.

The Thunder had two performers eclipse the old school-best mark in the long jump. Freshman Jeffery Barnett (Fremont, Ohio/Fremont-Ross) set the new school record with a jump of 22 feet, four inches. Logan Lindsley (Battle Creek, Mich./Quincy) also topped the old school record and very nearly beat out Barnett with a jump of 22 feet, one inch. Both jumps were the first to top 22 feet in team history.

Lindsley was not to be outshone in the triple jump however, as the junior set a new program-best mark in that event. Lindsley's jump of 42 feet beat the previous record by 10 feet.

Sam Gilly (St. Joseph, Ill./St. Joseph-Ogden) set a new program-best mark in the weight throw with a toss of 57 feet, 7.5 inches. The senior topped his old personal-best mark by over three feet to set the new school mark, which was set last year by current teammate Andrew Bunting. Isaach Hines (Portsmouth, Ohio/Clay) added a fifth-place finish in the event.

Trine performers also saw success in the shot put, as Courtney Mitchell (Fort Wayne, Ind./Bishop Leurs) placed second and Derek Scott (Niles, Mich./Niles) placed fifth.

Will Collins (Marion, Ind./Marion) very nearly joined the ranks of new school records in his collegiate debut. The freshman ran a time of 7.02 seconds, just one-hundredth of a second shy of the program-best mark. Collins placed fifth in the event.

Jacob Leopold (Ottawa, Ohio/Ottawa-Glandorf) got off to a strong start in the 800-meter dash as he won the event. Leopold, Trine's record holder in the event, ran a time of 1:58.73 to open the season.

Freshmen Jacob Payne (LaPorte, Ind./LaPorte) and Ryan Haarer (Goshen, Ind./Northridge) had strong collegiate debuts in the pole vault. Payne placed second, while Haarer placed fifth. Trine also had two top-five performers in the 60-meter hurdles, where James Gregory (Akron, Ind./Tippecanoe Valley) placed second and Elijah Beard (Frankfort, Ind./Rossville) finished fifth.

Robert Duke's (Greentown, Ind./Eastern) fourth-place finish in the mile run and freshman Jasper Bassett's (Auburn, Ind./DeKalb) fifth-place performance in the 400-meter run rounded out top-five performances for the Thunder.
