Gilly named MIAA Field Athlete of the Week

FREELAND, Mich.-- Trine's Sam Gilly has been named the MIAA Men's Field Athlete of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday.

Gilly (St. Joseph, Ill./St. Joseph-Ogden) won the honors after setting a new school record in the Weight Throw while competing in Trine University's Don and Riley Zimmer Indoor Classic last Friday. The senior's toss of 58 feet, three inches marked the second time he had broken the school record in the event this year. This is the first time Gilly is being honored as Field Athlete of the Week in his career.

After showing steady improvement over the past several seasons, Gilly has established himself as a contender for a trip to the National Championships this year. The senior is currently ranked fourth in the nation in the Weight Throw. He has improved his Weight Throw distance by nearly 17 feet over the course of the past two seasons.

Gilly and the Trine men's track and field team will return to action Friday and Saturday, Feb. 5-6 at the Hillsdale Wide Track Classic. The Thunder will compete in a field that is typically mostly made up of NCAA Division II and NAIA performers.
