Thunder Place Third in Indiana Division III Championships

GREENCASTLE, Ind.-- The Trine men's track and field team placed third in the 2016 Indiana Division III Championships, held Saturday at DePauw University.

The Thunder totaled 110 points and finished behind Wabash and Rose Hulman. Trine got two first-place finishes, one on the track from Patrick Richardville (Leo, Ind. / Leo) and one in the field from Sam Gilly (St. Joseph, Ill. / St. Joseph-Ogden). Thunder performers also notched four second-place finishes. Trine was one of nine Division III teams competing in the meet.

Richardville won the 100-meter dash at an event for the second time this spring. His time was 10.97 seconds. Richardville also placed fourth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.62 seconds and competed on the 4-x-100-meter and 4-x-400-meter relay teams. He got support from Calvin Sander's (Jasper, Ind. / Northeast Dubois) personal-record time for a sixth-place finish in the 200-meter and John Daniel's (Fort Wayne, Ind. / Carroll) eighth-place finish in the 100-meter dash.

Gilly accounted for Trine's field victory in the hammer throw. The senior turned in a distance of 169 feet, 2 inches. Gilly also placed sixth in the discus. Mitchell Martin (Monroe, Mich. / Monroe) added a personal-record throw of 156 feet, 6 inches to place fourth and offer another strong performance in the hammer throw.

The performance of the 4-x-400-meter relay team helped highlight second-place finishes. Richardville, Jasper Bassett (Auburn, Ind. / DeKalb), Zach Markley (Winamac, Ind. / Winamac) and Jacob Leopold (Ottawa, Ohio / Ottawa-Glandorf) combined for a time of 3:21.61 for a season-best time for Trine in the relay. That time is currently ranked 18th in the nation.

Bassett and Markley each turned in strong individual performances in the 400-meter dash. Each runner ran the first sub-50 second time of their respective careers, with Bassett placing second in 49.22 and Markley finishing in 49.88.

Leopold added a season-best time of 1:55.86 to narrowly finish behind the top performer in the 800-meter run.

Jessie Dowell (Remington, Ind. / Tri Junior-Senior) notched a personal-best in the javelin throw at his second-straight event to place second. Dowell's throw was measured at 168 feet, 11 inches.

Nicholas Zak (Saint John, Ind. / Hanover Central) and Paul Baker (Columbus, Ind. / Columbus East) each ran personal-bests in the 1500-meter run. Zak placed third in 4:02.59, while Baker topped his previous-best by nine seconds to place fifth.

Jordan Zamarron's (Ionia, Mich. / Ionia) fifth-place finish in the 10K highlighted performances elsewhere on the track. James Gregory (Akron, Ind. / Tippecanoe Valley) placed seventh in the 110-meter hurdles and eighth in the 400-meter hurdles.

Kody Snyder (Burnettsville, Ind. / Twin Lake) notched an eighth-place finish in the 5K, while Cody Mart (Channahon, Ill. / Minooka Community) set a personal-record by 18 seconds to place eighth in the 3K steeplechase.

Troy Fritz (Monte Vista, Col. / Sangre De Cristo) highlighted Trine's efforts elsewhere in the field with a fifth-place finish in the long jump. He also placed seventh in the triple jump.

Courtney Mitchell (Fort Wayne, Ind. / Bishop Luers) added a sixth-place finish in the shot put, while Ryan Haarer (Goshen, Ind. / Northridge) and Jacob Payne (LaPorte, Ind. / LaPorte) tied for sixth in the pole vault.

Trine will compete in Grand Valley State University's Al Owens Classic, which begins Friday, April 22.
