ALLENDALE, Mich.--The Trine men's track and field team saw successful performances in Grand Valley State University's Al Owens Classic.
Highlighting the efforts of Thunder performers was two top-five finishes in the 400-meter dash. Jasper Bassett (Auburn, Ind. / DeKalb) ran a time of 50.13 seconds to place fourth, while Zach Markley (Winamac, Ind. / Winamac) finished just behind at 50.14 seconds to finish fifth. The two performers ran the best NCAA Division III times in the event. They finished behind two Division II performers and a non-collegiate competitor.
Patrick Richardville (Leo, Ind./ Leo) notched the top Division III performance in two events. The sophomore ran a season-best time of 22.25 seconds to place fifth in the 200-meter dash. He also placed seventh in the 100-meter dash, clocking a time of 11.17 seconds.
Markley and Richardville also made up part of the 4-x-400-meter relay team. Richardville, Markley, John Daniel (Fort Wayne, Ind. / Carroll) and John Harris-Scott (Wesley Chapel, Fla. / Wiregrass Ranch) combined for a 43.00-second performance to place sixth.
Michael Becker (Wauseon, Ohio / Wauseon) earned the best time by a Division III runner in the 5K. Becker placed eighth overall as he crossed the finish line in 15:28.88.
The 4-x-400-meter relay team, consisting of Jacob Leopold (Ottawa, Ohio / Ottawa-Glandorf), Markley, Quinton Daniels (Fort Wayne, Ind. / Snider) and Bassett placed ninth. Jonathan Phillips (Royal Center, Ind. / Pioneer Junior-Senior) added a personal-best time of 10:16.12 to place 10th in the 3K steeplechase.
Coutney Mitchell (Fort Wayne, Ind. / Bishop Luers) highlighted the team's efforts in field events. Mitchell threw a season-best distance of 47 feet, 3.5 inches. He placed 10th overall.
Ryan Haarer (Goshen, Ind. / Northridge) and Jacob Payne (LaPorte, Ind. / LaPorte) each cleared 13 feet, 11.75 inches to tie for 10th in the pole vault.
