Gilly Named to All-MIAA Men's Track and Field Team

FREELAND, Mich.-- Trine's Sam Gilly has been named to the All-MIAA Men's Track and Field Team, the conference announced Thursday.

Gilly (St. Joseph, Ill. / St. Joseph-Ogden) earned the recognition for his performance in Field Day, which serves as the conference's outdoor championship. Gilly won the hammer throw to take home his first conference title in the event. The senior also placed second in the discus throw and fourth in the shot put. The all-conference honor is the first outdoor honor for Gilly and adds to his growing list of accolades during the 2015-16 school year.

A strong outdoor season has followed up an Indoor campaign that saw Gilly earn All-America honors in the weight throw. The senior placed eighth in the nation at the Indoor National Championship meet. The senior set a new school-record in the weight throw this season.

Gilly was named the MIAA Field MVP for his performance at the inaugural MIAA Indoor Track and Field Championships this winter. He helped lead the Thunder to a first-place finish. He also earned USTFCCCA All-Region honors and was named MIAA Field Athlete of the Week once during the indoor season.

Gilly is currently ranked 33rd in the nation in the hammer throw. He would need to work his way into the top 15 in the nation to earn a trip to the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field National Championships, set for May 26-28 in Waverly, Iowa.
