Thunder Men Compete in Last Chance Meets

ANGOLA, Ind.-- Four Trine men's track and field athletes competed in last chance meets Thursday.

Sam Gilly (St. Joseph, Ill. / St. Joseph-Ogden) placed second in the hammer throw in the 2016 All-Great Lakes Elite Meet in Delaware, Ohio. The senior unleashed a personal-best throw of 178 feet, 3 inches at the meet. The performance vaulted the senior's national ranking to No. 27, though that mark falls short of qualifying for next week's National Championship meet.

Gilly also set a new personal-best mark of 150 feet in the discus. The performance wrapped up the senior's career for the Thunder. Gilly's time at Trine was marked by continuous improvement, which resulted in the senior earned All-America honors in the weight throw at this year's NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field National Championships.

Jessie Dowell (Remington, Ind. / Tri Junior-Senior) came away with a throw of 150 feet, 6 inches to place eighth in the javelin throw at the All-Great Lakes Elite Meet.

Nicholas Zak (Saint John, Ind. / Hanover Central) was one of two Trine runners to compete in the NCC Gregory Qualifier at North Central College. Zak ran a personal-best time of 1:52.57 to place seventh. The time ranks 41st in the nation, though it is shy of qualifying for the national meet.

Jasper Bassett (Auburn, Ind. / DeKalb) rounded out Thunder competitors on Thursday. Bassett ran a time of 50.62 seconds in the 400-meter dash.
