Barnett's School-Record Jump Highlights Alumni Invitational

ANGOLA, Ind. -- A school record and five first-place finishes highlighted the performance of the Trine men's track and field team in the Keith Turner Alumni Invitational, held Saturday at Keith E. Busse / Steel Dynamics Athletic Recreation Center.

Jeffery Barnett (Fremont, Ohio / Fremont-Ross) set a school-record in the long jump to highlight the performance of the Thunder. Barnett came away with a jump measured at 23 feet, 6.75 inches. He beat his own school-record by more than a foot.

Jasper Bassett (Auburn, Ind. / DeKalb) won the 300-meter dash in 36.19 seconds, with Jacob Leopold (Ottawa, Ohio / Ottawa-Glandorf) finishing just behind in 36.51. The two traded places in the 600-meter run, with Leopold taking home the win in 1:23.27 to narrowly edge Bassett's time of 1:23.29.

Mat Bollan (Pleasant Lake, Ind. / Angola) added the final win of the day on the track. The freshman ran a personal-record 8.75 seconds to win the 60-meter hurdles.

Jacob Payne (LaPorte, Ind. / LaPorte) and Trey Waagen (Horton, Mich. / Hanover-Horton) tied for the top spot in the pole vault. Each vaulter cleared a height of 13 feet, 7.25 inches.

Trine's throwers also turned in a strong performance in the shot put, taking home three of the top four spots. Nick Gerber placed second with a toss of 43 feet, 1 inch, followed by Zach DeMeester (Coldwater, Mich. / Coldwater) with a personal-best 42 feet, 11 inches to finish third. Skyler Dunckley (Cedar, Mich. / Traverse City West) added a throw of 42 feet, 9.75 inches to place fourth in his collegiate debut.

Andrew Bunting (Brunswick, Ohio / Brunswick) contributed a second-place finish in the weight throw with a toss of 54 feet, 1.75 inches. Martin added a third-place finish in the event.

Trine returns to action Friday, Jan. 27 when the Thunder host the Don and Riley Zimmer Indoor Classic. Events are scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
