Barnett, Bassett Sweep MIAA Weekly Honors

FREELAND, Mich. -- Trine's Jeffery Barnett and Jasper Bassett have been named the MIAA Men's Track and Field Athletes of the Week, the conference announced today.

Barnett (Fremont, Ohio / Fremont-Ross) earned the conference's Field Athlete of the Week honors for his performance in the long jump Saturday's Keith Turner Alumni Invitational. The sophomore set a new school record with a jump of 23 feet, 6.75 inches (7.18 meters), breaking his own school record in the process. Barnett's jump is currently ranked fifth in the nation, putting him on track to potentially earn a trip to the NCAA Division III National Championships. He is being honored as Field Athlete of the Week for the first time in his career.

Bassett (Auburn, Ind. / DeKalb) won the 300-meter run in Saturday's meet with a school-record time of 36.19 seconds. He also ran a 1:23.29 time, just .02 seconds behind the winning time, to place second in the 600-meter run. Bassett is ranked second in the conference in the 600-meter run. He has also excelled in the 400-meter run this year, ranking first in the MIAA and 13th in the nation in the event. The sophomore is being honored as MIAA Track Athlete of the Week for the first time in his career.

The Trine men's track and field team returns to action Friday, Jan. 27 when the Thunder host the Don and Riley Zimmer Indoor Classic in Keith E. Busse / Steel Dynamics Athletic Recreation Center. Events are scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
