Barnett's Historic Performance Leads to MIAA Honors

FREELAND, Mich. -- Trine's Jeffery Barnett was named the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Men's Field Athlete of the Week, the conference announced today.

Barnett (Fremont, Ohio / Fremont-Ross) turned in the sixth-best long jump distance in NCAA Division III history in jumping a distance of 7.61 meters (24 feet, 11.75 inches) in Friday's Don and Riley Zimmer Indoor Classic. Barnett's performance broke his own school record, set last week in Trine's Keith Turner Alumni Invitational. The sophomore earned conference Field Athlete of the Week honors for the second week in a row.

Barnett's jump is ranked No. 1 in the nation and virtually locks up a bid to the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships in Naperville, Ill. Barnett holds a 0.11-meter (4.5 inch) advantage over the second-best jump in the nation. The national championship meet will be held Mar. 10-11.

The Trine men's track and field team returns to action Saturday, Feb. 4 at the IWU Midwest Classic. Events are scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
