Men's Track and Field Competes in Midwest Classic

MARION, Ind. -- The Trine men's track and field team competed in the IWU Midwest Classic, held Saturday at Indiana Wesleyan Indoor Sports Complex.

Jeffery Barnett (Fremont, Ohio / Fremont-Ross) earned the team's best finish on the day, placing second in the long jump. The sophomore leapt a distance of 7.05 meters (23 feet, 0.25 inches). He finished 0.10 meters (3.75 inches) behind the first-place NAIA performer.

Derek Scott (Niles, Mich. / Niles) placed fourth to headline a strong effort in the shot put. Scott's throw was measured at 13.92 meters (45 feet, 8 inches). Skyler Dunckley (Cedar, Mich. / Traverse City West) and Zach DeMeester (Coldwater, Mich. / Coldwater) added personal-bests, as Dunckley placed sixth and DeMeester placed eighth.

Andrew Bunting (Brunswick, Ohio / Brunswick) led Trine's performance in the weight throw with a fifth-place finish, tossing a distance of 16.13 meters (52 feet, 11 inches). Mitch Martin (Monroe, Mich. / Monroe) placed sixth, while Nick Gerber (Goshen, Ind. / Goshen) added a personal-best.

Rounding out the highlights in field events was a personal-best pole vault by Ryan Haarer (Goshen, Ind. / Northridge). The sophomore vaulted a height of 4.30 meters (14 feet, 1.25 inches) to set his new personal mark.

Highlighting the efforts on the track was a third-place finish by Jasper Bassett (Auburn, Ind. / DeKalb) in the 400-meter dash. The sophomore notched a time of 50.29 seconds, his best of the season. The time ranks 33rd in the nation.

The 4-x-400-meter relay team notched a fifth-place finish. Gregory Littlejohn (LaPorte, Ind. / LaPorte), Bassett, Patrick Richardville (Leo, Ind. / Leo) and Jacob Leopold (Ottawa, Ohio / Ottawa-Glandorf) combined for a time of 3:28.81. Leopold added a fifth-place finish in the 800-meter run.

Rounding out the highlights on the track were personal-bests by Mat Bollan (Pleasant Lake, Ind. / Angola) and Jonathan Phillips (Royal Center, Ind. / Pioneer). Bollan's PR came with an 8.68-second time in the 60-meter hurdles. Phillips added his personal-best in the 3K with a time of 8:58.83.
