Thunder Notch One First-Place Finish at Bellarmine Invitational

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- The Trine men's track and field team notched one first-place finish in the Bellarmine Invitational.

Jasper Bassett (Auburn, Ind. / DeKalb) won the 800-meter run to highlight the efforts of the Thunder on the track. He ran a time of 1:56.87, a season-best by a Trine performer in the event. The time ranks second in the MIAA. Adrien Howard (Marion, Ind. / Marion) added notched a fifth-place finish, while Austin Ganger (Mishawaka, Ind. / Penn) placed seventh.

Mat Bollan (Pleasant Lake, Ind. / Angola) notched a second-place finish in the 110-meter hurdles. The freshman turned in a time of 15.60 seconds.

Trine's relay teams each placed fourth, but ran the second-best time in the MIAA this season in each event. Bollan, Bassett, Jeffery Barnett (Fremont, Ohio / Fremont-Ross) and Patrick Richardville (Leo, Ind. / Leo) combined on a 3:24.40 time in the 4-x-400-meter relay. Barnett, Nick Hayes (Merrillville, Ind. / Merrillville), Jacob Root (Vicksburg, Mich. / Vicksburg) and James Washington (Michigan City, Ind. / Michigan City) ran a 43.18-second time in the 4-x-100-meter relay.

Barnett added a fifth-place finish in the 100-meter dash, while Hayes placed sixth.

Elsewhere on the track, Jacob Leopold (Ottawa, Ohio / Ottawa-Glandorf) placed fifth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 50.87 seconds. Adam Schaaf (Greentown, Ind. / Eastern) added a personal-best time of 15:33.62 to place sixth in the 5,000-meter run.

Derek Scott's (Niles, Mich. / Niles) third-place finish in the shot put highlighted Trine's efforts in field events. His top throw was measured at 13.63 meters (44 feet, 8.75 inches). Nick Gerber (Goshen, Ind. / Goshen) added a fifth-place finish. Gerber also placed sixth in the discus and eighth in the hammer throw.

David Schaaf (Kokomo, Ind. / Northwestern) notched a fourth-place finish in the javelin with a throw of 38.18 meters (125 feet, 3 inches). Mitch Martin (Monroe, Mich. / Monroe) led the Thunder with a sixth-place finish in the hammer throw. Andrew Bunting (Brunswick, Ohio / Brunswick) added seventh-place finishes in the discus and hammer throw.

Trine competed in a field made up largely of NCAA Division II performers.
