Martin Places Fifth in Hammer Throw at GINA Relays

HILLSDALE, Mich. -- Mitch Martin placed fifth in the hammer throw to lead the performance of the Trine men's track and field team Friday in the Hillsdale GINA Relays.

Martin (Monroe, Mich. / Monroe) unleashed a throw of 50.48 meters (165 feet, 7 inches) to notch the finish. The sophomore came away with the best hammer throw by a NCAA Division III performer in the meet.

Andrew Bunting (Brunswick, Ohio / Brunswick) finished ninth in the hammer throw. His efforts resulted in a distance of 46.40 meters (152 feet, 3 inches). David Schaaf (Kokomo, Ind. / Northwestern) added a new personal-best in the event.

Derek Scott (Niles, Mich. / Niles) notched Trine's best performance in the shot put. The senior placed 11th with a distance of 13.44 (44 feet, 1.25 inches).

The Hillsdale GINA Relays is one of the largest track meets in the midwest and features performers from all levels of NCAA competition, as well as NAIA and junior college performers. The meet is hosted by Hillsdale College.

Trine's throwers will compete in the discus and javelin events tomorrow at the GINA Relays.
